The dog who barked at the wrong tree

Who are you to say we’re just for money?

We all seek for something to ponder upon just to earn, well in fact it’s very true. But what if the responsibility of bringing the facts to people becomes vague?

What am I saying? You may be wondering that being a journalist is not an easy task. Why? For the simple reason that we don’t hold a permanent employment record just to say that we are earning a regular pay every month. We are journalists who seek for the truth and to bring people what they need to be informed.

Maybe your now a bit confused about what I am talking about. Well here’s the story behind that.

A media from a certain station here in Pangasinan was just about to cover some news about a municipality here. The said media was tasked to interview the mayor in that municipality to get his opinion about a certain matter, in which the mayor was concerned. While waiting for the turn to directly go to the mayors’ office and conduct the interview, the municipal administrator with a seemingly bad mood at that day caught the attention of that media. He then heavily handed an envelope with a sarcastic face silently saying that there is no need to go to the mayor just to get some money (“ika nga eh makuha ka sa tingin”).

Well according to some information I got from the media, the municipal administrator was indeed arrogant in some way. Also stated that the administrator have a face that can’t be painted. Well, it’s up to you guys if you want to give meaning to it literally.

Well the interview then became useless because the media didn’t even have glimpse to the mayor who was supposed to be interviewed. And because of the way the municipal administrator acted, the media left the said municipality with a grief not getting the information, also angry for how the administrator looks upon media men whose only purpose is to bring news to the people.

Considering this we as journalists need money but we are not that greedy to take some envelope as if we are just up to the money. We as journalists are up to the information being fed to us through interviews, news gatherings and informative facts in order to bring the people the news they need in a day-to-day living.

To that municipal administrator, you and I are just but human. Don’t look upon the world as if all people you see have same intentions. A simple quote to ponder upon, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

Surplus budget to cushion economic crisis crisis

DANLOR CHAMP D. HIDALGO

Reporter

THE CITY government of Urdaneta has put up P52 million cushion funds which may rap when tax collection fails below expectations.

City Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. told the Pangasinan Today over a telephone interview that the cushion fund came from last year’s budget surplus amounting to P28 million and another P24 million from the Urdaneta City University which managed by the city government.

“The Surplus budget will make up for the P30 million reduction of the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share of the city as a result of creation of new cities” Perez said.

“We will reserve our savings as a sort of shock absorber for any eventuality that might affect our income in 2009 due to the problem about the economy,” Perez added.

In terms of collection, the city government believes that they can reach its collection goal as there is no sign of declining in collection from business permits and licenses.

Perez said of the city’s total budget of P537 million for 2009, at least P207 million of which is the local government’s expected IRA share.

“In the remote possibility that the national government would not be able to collect all the taxes due to the economic crisis, the city government will have a fall back because of its buffer fund,” the mayor added.

Gordon commends info-techs

BY Janice Hidalgo

General Manager

DAGUPAN CITY -- Senator Richard Gordon commended some 1,500 Pangasinan information communications technology enthusiasts for choosing to be "experts or masters of information and effectively edge out your peers in the quest for excellence and success in your chosen careers."

Gordon told the participants in the 2nd regional ICT congress held at the People’s Asrtrodome here that they outclass their peers in the global market because they are equipped with the latest trends in the information highway, adding that "a well-informed person automatically sheds off his bashful, non-productive, and parochial persona."

After keynoting the ICT congress under the auspices of the city government headed by Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. and Medialink Events Management, Gordon rallied the local press to "obligate themselves to promote a transparent government with trustworthy, honest, and effective leaders."

In a forum participated in by members of the Pangasinan Press and Radio Club headed by Allan Sison and held at the Lenox Hotel here, Gordon cited the qualities of public officials who will lead the country to economic progress, singling out those with "tried and tested leadership credentials, who are honest and have correct values.".

When he was mayor of Olongapo City, Gordon recalled, he was able to transform a crime-rocked city into a model of economic and cultural renaissance.

On a newsman’s query on his leadership credentials that could be his passport to the presidency, Gordon said that his "Wow Philippines program effectively lifted the economy from the doldrums and effectively wiped out an era of despair and negative culture, rekindling hope and a vibrant outlook among our people."
